Welcome to my site. My name is Zachary Wiest and I am the builder of the Chesapeake Light Craft Skerry that is showcased on this blog. You can find out more about the Skerry and why I chose it by clicking on the Skerry navigation button above.
I am sure you are wondering why anyone would choose to build rather than buy a boat. For me, it is the experience. Ever since my Lego filled childhood, I have enjoyed building things. I’ve built models, computers, and even started building an airplane, but I have never worked with wood. Living in South Florida and realizing I am spending too little time on the water, I decided I needed a boat. Hence came this project. I plan to row her around my neighborhood’s canals, launching from my backyard dock. I’ll eventually get a trailer and tow her to the Biscayne Bay for some sailing as well.
Just in case you are wondering more about me, I’ll fill you in. I am an Active Duty U.S. Coast Guard MH-65C Helicopter Pilot stationed at Air Station Miami. I have been flying helicopters since I graduated high school in 2003, but began my Coast Guard service and military flight career in 2008. Outside of flying, I enjoy sailing, cycling, and tinkering with technology. I am originally from Pennsylvania, but have been living in Florida since 2009. Feel free to shoot me an email about anything you see on the site. I can be reached at zach@zachwiest.com.
